Galata Tower Oct 05, 2017
The Galata Tower is located in the Beyoglu (Pera) area of Istanbul. It was within walking distance from our hotel.

This medieval tower built in 1348 is itself not very high only 9 storeys, just that it is built on a higher point (above sea level) in Beyoglu so from across the other side of the sea, it stands tall and it was the tallest structure when it was built. It is supposed to provide you with a great view of the Bosphorus sea.

There was a long queue on Sunday morning in September to go up the tower so we queued. We had to go through security scanning. Then we saw the prices, we are not willing to pay approx. EUR 14 to go up this small tower so we left. They do those packages whereby you could get your photo taken in the ticket price for EUR20.

But there are plenty of shops around the Galata Tower and the great thing about the shops in this area is that there are price tags unlike in the Grand Bazaar. So when in Beyoglu, it is worth checking out even if you decide not to go up the tower (there are lifts so no need to worry about climbing up medieval stairs)
