We have just got back from the Gainsborough Hotel today & will never be going back. We were recommended this hotel from friends who use the hotel often & thought through past experience that the reviews on here were always OTT. Its the first time their spot on. well almost!
the property is old so you expect it to be a little tatty round the edges & it was but to be fair the reports on here of damp & mould are unfounded but then we never see every room.
The lady who runs it kindly booked us in a few hours early so that was a good start, they seem freindly enough - if you make the effort to chat with them otherwise your just stared at. The hotel does have a funny smell about it - thought nothing of it on the 1st night but choked us come the 2nd day. the smell is not damp - it smells of curry spices (they are Asian who run it)! The room we had was ok - basic but what we expected, the mattress however needed replacing 15yrs ago & is not fit to be slept on. The shower was hot but took ages to get hot. windows were filthy upstairs but they cleaned the downstairs ones often enough. prob too tight to pay to have them done.
Internet access is advertised - yet not once did we spot a computer - although we looked very hard.
Breakfast was ok - nothing special or particually hot & limited choice.
No eve entertainment at all.

now onto our biggest issue - PARKING.
Its advertised as 'secure' parking for 24 cars BUT no way would you fit 24 cars in, its at the back of the 'Hotel' & the way it is set up is if ur 1st to park your blocked in by at least 2 other cars. It would be secure if they closed the gates but they never bothered & we did find youngsters snooping about the cars in the early eve.
Reception has a note up saying that due to stacked parking that car keys should b left with reception. we had parked close to the gate to stop us being blocked in as we were going out for a meal to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary 1 eve and we were blocked in by a idoit that prevented the gates being closed.
Kuky (the lady in charge) was most unhelpful & said their was nothing they cud do as they never bothered to take keys. They do take ur car reg & phone number when u get there but said they would/could not find who it belonged to. We were told it was our own fault & nothing can be done. We had to walk into town & struggled to get somwhere nice to eat. The following morning we were still blocked in when we had checked out & she then said they were checking out aswell. So she DID know who the car belonged to.
They were most unhelpful to the situaltion & they could have made more of an effort to resolve the problem but they were unwilling.
If you book online for the hotel - your also told when you get there that you have to pay £5 a day to use the not so secure carpark.

The whole long weekend was spoilt by such a stupid thing that the hotel could have prevented & we came home feeling that our special day was ruined.

NEVER GO TO THIS HOTEL.
