Gainesville is a small city that lives and dies with the University of Florida, which is its centerpiece. The vast majority of people who live in Gainesville are inseparable from the university as they are the students and professors who make up the inhabitants of Gainesville. Because of this large and prestegious university, the people of Gainesville are diverse and represent a wide variety of backgrounds who have come from all over the country and the world to learn.
Along with these strong academic ties come fiercely strong sports ties. The University of Florida Gators, best known for their football and basketball, is what truly puts Gainesville on the map. College athletics is the difference maker between a small college town and a mad house on Saturdays in the fall for football season. Go Gators!
Gainesville also boasts several lakes and swamps that lend the namesake to the University’s mascot, the alligator. While alligators are common and can on rare occasion be found wandering the streets of town in search of another lake, they keep to themselves if left alone.
