Old Gagra (Stary Gagra): Gagarin Square Jul 09, 2016
What used to be the hub of the early resort is now somewhat abandoned. The large square (I think named Gagarin Square, although could be wrong) which used to be the town's bus station and shopping area still has some basic restaurants and grocery stores, but is eerily quiet and overshadowed by a huge abandoned building with interesting murals. For an idea how this used to look, go to the little museum over the road which has many photos from the 1950s and 1960s when this was the main focus of Gagra. During the war of 1992, Gagra saw heavy fighting and many buildings in the old part were destroyed. Now that the town has expanded for kilometres to the south, this old square is now a bit out of the way. It is photogenic though, especially with all the old Ladas still favoured by many taxi drivers.
