Gabinetto Segredo Naples Reviews
A UNIQUE Jan 03, 2011
Less inhibited than it is today in most countries, sex was a very important part of the Roman daily lives and it is not surprising that a great deal of erotic materials was discovered in the patrician houses, public buildings,baths,taverns...of the Vesuvian unearthed cities.
Throughout Pompeii were found many erotic frescoes, countless god Priapus depictions, personal amulets worn by men and women, bronzes and marbles, bells, vases, wind shimes and everyday ustensils all with an erotic theme.
The Gabinetto Segredo(secret cabinet or secret room) held in separate rooms of the Naples National Archaelogical Museum contains a unique collection of erotic or sexually explicit artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations. This collection was assembled during the 18th century and removed from public view for a long period and before the 60s only accessible to gentlemen of "mature age" and "well-known moral standing"...
The PHALLUS,god Priapus'iconic attribute is the item most on display.Made of stone, marble, wood or bronze...,it was placed in all ancient cities and found on walls, pavements along the streets,on the basements of houses,on front shops, sculpted in the architraves of bakeries' ovens...because at this time the male member was considered as a symbol of health, fertility,an auspicious omen of prosperity,a protector of male genitalia, a protection against the evil eye,a guarantee for success.
Another Pompeian charm was NOISE,that's the reason why many animals, babies had bells around their neck.In shops were used many bronze bells supported by phalluses or ithyphallic figures.Known as tintinnabula(windchimes),also associated with Mercury, the god of commerce, they were an auspicious sign of good business.
It is said everywhere that before visiting the secret room, people need to reserve a time at the main desk of the Museum.During our visit, few days after the re-opening of the secret cabinet(it was closed because of electricity works),it was possible to enter the secret room at any time, look at and take photograps(without flash).
