Boeing Tour Aug 31, 2010
When the tour begins, you first watch a short video before being taken out and put into a shuttle bus that will take you to the manufacturing buildings. No photographs are allowed of the plant, unfortunately, but it's a typical manufacturing plant with lots of wide open spaces. Of course, the buildings that the aircraft are put together in are massive, and we toured a couple of different buildings, which required a lot of walking, and a bus ride between the different buildings. Boeing uses a moving assembly line for the airplanes so that by the time the airplane reaches the doors of the hanger/manufacturing building, it's fully assembled. However, the moving assembly line moves so slowly that you can't see it happening. There is also a gift store at the main tourist area (two, actually), an upper level viewing area from the tourist building where you can look back at all the activity around the manufacturing buildings (but not into), where they paint the planes and such, or maybe get lucky and get to see a plane leaving on a test flight. The Future of Flight Aviation Center also has a museum section where you can get close to parts of aircraft and even sit in the cockpit of an airplane.
