Only one commercial historical building remains today Feb 06, 2017
Futai Street Mansion is the only historical commercial building existing in Taipei today. It was constructed in 1910 and most of the buildings in the area back then were government buildings which were used as offices. Under the Japanese the area was known as Yamato-Cho, and the original owners of the building which was used as their HQ were Takaishi Construction Company. The company was well known and was involved in construction and sales and expanded their operations to Tainan in the south. The mansion is constructed from wood and stone influenced by the classic European style. After the cessation of WWII the Chinese Nationalist Party took over the building and used it as a dormitory for high ranking Ministry of Defense Officials, until they vacated it in 1998. The whole building was eventually renovated at a cost of over US$ 1 million and opened to the public in 2007. Nowadays various exhibitions take place downstairs and in the two rooms upstairs. Downstairs there is also a small cafe and English leaflets are available.

The mansion is open everyday from 10 am - 6 pm except Sunday, and entrance is free.
