Dinner in a medieval passageway?! Mar 19, 2009
The location is quite unique. The restaurant is down a set of stairs and in a barrel vaulted passage that goes under Valletta to the Castille. It was used during many wars including WWII. The deocr is moder in contrast to the limestone walls. The space is intimate as the passage only accomodates one row of tables. There is a limited menu and it changes frequently. They offer Maltese specialties with a twist and simple Mediteranean dishes, as well.
The are extremely friendly and accomodating. They transformeed a dish to make it more vegetarian frienly without additional charge. The food is freah and tasty. The wine choices compliment the menu.
If this wasn't enough, they have a museum....yes a museum. The owner over 20 years, has made an animatronic representation of traditional Maltese life of 100 - 200 years ago, complete with a goat chewing hay (the hay moves in the goat's mouth). They are proud of the museum and the waitress went through and explained. Oh, I almost forgot, it also has the sounds associated with the action in the scenes. Unusual, but really interesting.
