Fukuyama Castle May 07, 2013
Fukuyama-jo or Fukuyama Castle is located right across the street from Fukuyama train station. It is open from 9 am - 6:30 pm and cost 200 yen to enter.

The original castle was completed in 1622. Lord Mizuno Katsunari spent 3 years building it, to control and guard the countries in the West. It was a seven storied castle tower with a double moats inside and outside the castle ground. In the 1870s the moats were filled up. This destroyed many turrets. The remaining castle tower and bath house were burned down on 8th August 1945. What you see today is a concrete replica.

The museum inside displays some samurai armor, also the one worn by Mizuno Katsunari, portraits, paintings, swords and pottery. On the top floor there is a great view of the city from the balcony that goes around the tower.

There is absolutely nothing in English. Ask for a sheet in English when you buy the ticket. They don't give it to you automaticly! It doesn't say much, but it gives you an idea. Since it was impossible to understand anything I was through the museum in 20 minutes. The visit of the castle ground takes about the same time (open 6am - 10pm).
