Not sure which part of Trinidad this person is in but there have been 24 hour gas stations for over five years now. they are strategically located in the heart of Port of Spain and West Trinidad. Some of the smaller privately owned stations usually close at around 8-9pm. The one stop gas stations are your best bet and they offer self service and at the pump service and a convenience store so u could pick up anything you might need til u get home. Having cash on hand doesn't matter. I don't carry a lot of cash so i use my debit card which you would have to go to a cashier and pay for your pump or use your credit card at the pump (what i do).

When going to get petrol (gas) in Trinidad, make sure you have the money in cash, in local T&T dollars. Cards are generally NOT accepted, and US dollars will only grudgingly if at all be taken. Also, make sure you get your fuel during normal shop business hours - you'll be out of luck late at night.
It's still common for your car to be filled up for you, and in some places you need to pay first before you can fill up or be filled. At the moment (July 2007), you'll be paying the equivalent of around 25 pence per litre, or about a quarter of the price in the UK. The main chains are NP and Unipet.
