Fair Game Oct 01, 2017
The Fryeburg Fair started up way back in 1851 and its endurance has led it to become Maine’s largest fall festival. Stretching over eight days (spanning two Sundays), the fair typically begins at the very beginning of October, though I confess being unaware of how they pick exact dates each year. If you are seeking a true country fair, Fryeburg has it all and then some: carnival rides and games, food stalls galore (everything from traditional fare to cotton candy, etc.), a lot of demonstrations, food and agricultural competitions for blue ribbons, a lot of other wacky competitions (see Fireman’s Muster, below), live music, horse races, exhibits of farm equipment, a petting zoo and tons more.

Several hundred thousand folks attend the gala, so expect a crowd, but the fairgrounds are enormous and while many scheduled events draw masses, you can always find elbow room somewhere. Livestock displays are everywhere and almost any variety of farm critter may be found hanging out in stalls or getting prettied up just before their competition is about to begin. Sometimes it is not just a beauty contest, however, and there are ox pulls, horse pulls and of course, pig scrambles (where children chase greased piggy’s and attempt to get them in a bag).

Plenty of human competition takes place too. I was here for the first day when the famous Fireman’s Muster takes place. Teams of fireman from local communities contest one another in a variety of bizarre events like the ladder climb. Here a team of four sprints towards a two story ladder and raises it so one of the crew can race to the top and ring a bell – the climber typically begins the ascent even as the rest of the crew are still raising the ladder! Possibly topping this for excitement is the Skillet Throw. Only ladies need apply, and they attempt to launch a hefty cast iron frying pan further than the rest. Must be seen to be appreciated.

While I could ramble on and on about this splendid event I think you get the gist. So this fall when you head north to peep at leaves, pencil in a slight detour to a fantastic country fair and relive the good old days.
