From/to Montego Bay Airport Feb 12, 2017
Getting from to the airport is not hassle free. First rule: Establish the price before boarding.

If you know how to get to your hotel and are familiar with the route taxi system, a route taxi is the cheapest option. A ride on those to downtown Montego Bay or to Gloucester Avenue (Hip Strip) will cost you only around 100 JMD (less than 1 US$). Be sure to have Jamaican money, otherwise you may be ending up without the change for your 20 US$ bill. Route taxis stop close to the domestic departure area at the westernmost end of the terminal building. They are the preferred mean of public transport for airport employees and locals. For the way back, ask your hotel where to get the route taxis or get one at the local transportation hub in the south of the city centre.

Walking to the Hip Strip may take you around 20 minutes and inolves a lot uphill and downhill walk. Be aware that taxi drivers will annoy you all the way long and offer their services which you can decline by repeating “No, thanks”. This walk is not recommended during the hours of darkness. Walking to Ironshore is not recommended at all as the area southeast of the runway close to Providence Heights is not considered to be safe for foreigners.

Normal taxis are the normal mean of transport for those who have not a pre-arranged transportation to their hotel. However, they are quite expensive. 15 US$ to Ironshore or the Hip Strip is a normal price, higher prices are paid for downtown (around 20 US$) or places even further away.

I recommend to ask for quotes for a hotel shuttle, if your accomodation offers such. If it is free or less than a normal taxi, take it. If it's a similar price, a normal taxi may make more sense. The arrival area is awkward to wait as you will be hassled by taxi drivers offering your service all the time. And if your pick up service is late (not unusual in Jamaica unfortunately), it is a horrible experience to wait in this area. I had to take this option as my accomodation rebooked me to another place - and, guess what? I had to wait for 1 1/2 hours until my shuttle arrived.

Arrival in Montego Bay sounds horrible and is horrible. Once you have gone through this and left the more annoying parts of Montego Bay, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful island to enjoy!
