Traveling by bus from Atitlan in Guatemala to San Cristobal in Mexico May 19, 2012
Ok, I am just going to list some connections on wheels and hopefully you’ll find something useful…

From San Pedro, San Marcos or San Jose take bus that starts from San Pedro (in the front of the church) every hour going towards Guatemala City or Xela and exit on Pan American highway (it is called 148km or locals call it short 48). This part costs 20Q and takes 1hour.

To go to Xela costs 20Q(2.5 hours)and bus leaves you at the terminal that is a bit away from the center, but lots of city bus lines (colectivos) will take you to the center (1.25Q no matter the distance). You have to cross whole market to get to the road where colectivos stop.

From Xela you can go to two border crossings with Mexico, but let’s say that you are going to La Mesilla. You can take direct bus (around 40Q) or take bus to Huehue (20Q, 3.5 hours) and stay there overnight. Huehue terminal is also a bit away from the town and transport to the center is 2Q flat rate.

From Huehue to the La Mesilla buses go every 15min, cost 20Q and takes around 3 hours. When the bus stops take tuk-tuk (3Q) to the border which is around 3km away. When you cross Guatemalan border, get into colectivo taxi 8-10pesos and go to the Mexican immigration which is 4km away.

IMPORTANT: you can change money only on Guatemalan side of the border. On Mexican side of the border there is no exchange or bank.

Dollar to Quetzal – 1 : 7.6 (on the border 7)

Dollar to Peso – 1 : 13.4 (on the border 12)

Pass the immigration you have few options:

- Direct OCC bus – 94 pesos

- Stop one of the tourist buses and bargain with them to take you to San Cristobal – 100 pesos

- Take local van (excellent vans) to Comitan (35 pesos, less than 2 hours) and from there it is easy to go to San Cristobal (40 pesos, 1.5 hours)

All connections do not require any wait... It is amazing how transport system clicks in this parts...

Good luck and enjoy, I know I did…
My bag matches the color :)
