From Kingston to the Blue Mountains Peak Feb 15, 2017
Getting from Kingston to the Blue Mountain Peak involves a couple of steps but is not as difficult as it may sound. The usual route goes from Kingston via Papine and Mavis Bank to Penlyne Castle where most of the guesthouses are.

Kingston – Papine: Papine ist in the outskirts of Kingston, take bus 900 from Half Way Tree transportation hub to Papine for 100 JMD. Alternatively, there are a lot of route taxis running along Old Hope Road for the same price per person. Travel time is around 20 minutes.

Papine – Mavis Bank: A route taxi from Papine to Mavis Bank is a little more expensive with 150 JMD per person. The route taxis depart from the stop in front of the Texaco gas station. Travel time from Papine to Mavis Bank is around 45 minutes. Mavis Bank is the closest point you can get to with public transportation.

Mavis Bank – Penlyne Castle: This part of the route is the most difficult as the roads are steep and far away from being well maintained. A 4WD vehicle is more than recommended and if you go here with a normal rental car, don't even think of letting the rental company know. It is possible to walk, but not completely free of risk if travelling alone. And also, it is better to save you energy to climb up the peak itself. Most people arrange a pickup from their guesthouse for this part, it is 45 minutes by car. Team up with other travellers to share the cost of this pickup service.

Many people do this as an overnight trip, starting in the early afternoon from Kingston and arriving around 6 pm. After dinner, they go to sleep just to wake up at 02:30 a.m. again to climb uop the mountain and be back around 9:00 a.m. After a heavy breakfast, they depart back to Kingston. It is possible, but as the climb is quite ardent, I recommend to stay one more night in the mountains after returning.
