Tallinn - Helsinki by ferry May 19, 2011
Since it was my first experience by visiting Finland by car I was enough calm about passing Gulf of Finland. I was ready to fly in Tallinn one hour before to buy a ticket, board a ferry and say: Hello Helsinki.

But one unexpected thing happened: tickets sold out! I really did not expected to be such route so popular and busy even though three different companies are in service. The more fascinating thing when cashier officer told: that there are no ticket's left for next two trips and similar issue with other companies.

The outcome of this story: had to buy tickets for next morning, to reschedule business meetings i had, and to spend night in Tallinn (which was not so bad).

So my advice is:

- Do not rely on your "logical" predictions about availability of tickets. My prediction was: there should be tickets available as route is served with three different companies and destination countries are not so big.

- Book in advance if you can. When arrived to "Tallink" ticket office, lady said that you can book any time you want and they will swap your ticket if necessary to next coming travel if there will be space left.

- If you're not in rush, spend night in Tallinn, take a morning ferry as the hotels are cheaper there in Tallinn, you can get one even near ferry terminal.

So that's my experience for this time and don't forget to use online booking as ticket offices will be outdated soon!

Good luck!

Efficient form of travel, Finland to Estonia Sep 20, 2009
The ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn was a good method of travel and I would reccommend it to anyone who is considering making the crossing as a worthwile and interesting trip.

We paid 60 odd euros each way for the trip however you can get certain deals online and at the main desk to suit your needs as long as you don't have to commit to an exact time frame.

A traveller we were speaking to on the ferry informed us he had paid less for taking his vehicle along and also that you can often get a same day return ticket cheaper that for a one way ticket. Bizzare, but worth knowing. There are different ferries that make the crossing at regular intervals through the day so it would be worth reviewing each crossing to see, which best suits your needs.
The plain sailing, optional 'booze…

If you're in Helsinki and would like to see more, I would recommend Tallinn. It's Estonia's capital and not that far away. Even if you're on tight budget, it's possible.

Eckerö Line is normally the cheapest way. Route fares are 20-25€ and day cruises 23-32€ depending on the day. There's tax free shop on board and Tallinn is cheap too, so that's great way to go shopping. And the cruises are always fun ;)
