Frienz Backpackers Auckland Reviews
Friends Away From Friends Jul 26, 2010
Frienz Backpackers has a reputation of almost being the Ryanair of hostels in New Zealand. This is primarily based on the fact that the prices tend to be some of the lowest in town. The reputation is certainly not deserving in the least.
The staff in Frienz were some of the best. They are the kind of people that you would always stop to chat to in the street and would always do their best to help you out with whatever advice you needed.
The kitchen is not the biggest or most equipped but if you time it right you will be ok. Nobody will try to butt in on you. Most importantly, I nor anyone else while I was there particualrly suffered from people helping themselves to your food. Again, apart from the odd drop of milk for tea but thats to be expected I reckon.
As for the rooms, they were not the best but they did not cram too many people to a room and generally they would try to spread people out across the hostel. I was lucky in my 4 bed dorm that I mostly had it to myself barring whenever they had a quiet solo girl or guy backpacking.
They sold wifi for $10 a day or $35 for 7 days. You got unlimited download on some of the quickest wifi I experienced in New Zealand. Having said that, they had 3 machines that were free and the library was only a 35 minute walkaway with its free wifi (100mb download limit.
Every night of the week they would hold a different event. Monday was poker night. Tuesday & Thursday was generally one of their organised bar crawls or bar parties. Wednesday is international meal night, costs $5 and was pretty substantial the times i got it. Friday was free cake and tea evening. Not sure if anything in particular was on Saturday but Sundays was movie night where they would either play 2 new movies or mix in a classic...oh and serve free popcorn, although the popcorn was more of a novelty.
This hostel, had it a better kitchen to rival the YHA in the City would have been my hands down favourite with its mix of quiet & party atmosphere. The mattress on the beds were generally a little on the thin side but they were cheaper than any of the other hostels.
