A remarkable act. Mar 17, 2017
I mentioned in another review here that in Whitecourt there is a palpable sense of civic pride. Certainly it is noticeable all over Alberta but it seems to be particularly pronounced here and this is reflected in a number of immaculately tended open spaces.

On review on this page I mentioned the 50th Anniversary Square and Friendship Park, which is the subject of this review, is another example. Like 50th Anniversary Square it is not large but it is extremely pleasant. It is constructed around a central circular flowerbed with a couple of benches which would make a lovely spot to sit and relax with a good book on a sunny day. As seems almost obligatory in Canada there are a couple of picnic tables and this would be another delightful pursuit in decent weather.

The friendship referred to in the name of the park is that of Whitecourt with it's twin city which is Kamiyubetsu in Japan. Given the appalling treatment meted out to Canadian prisoners of war by the Japanese during World War 2, I find this a remarkable act of reconciliation.

Directions: On the North side of 51st Avenue midway between 49th and 50th Streets.
