We got to the hostel pretty easy to my surprise. Manila looked like a giant animal that eats you as soon as you are close to it, and it does not spit you out till you are chewed on. There was no distinctive center of the town or business center that you could see and say, I am going there… Just kilometers and miles of small streets and one larger highway going through it all.

We came from Clark airport, with the shuttle that took some two hours to get to the bus station in Pasay City where most of the small bus stations are. Taxi cab drivers jumped on us offering their services for 3-4 time more money, but as you all know, just ignore those bugs, and go to the streets where you can get the fair fare and a smile (fair price from Pasay to Friendlys is around 110PhP).

Friendlys is located on Adriatico street, which is kind of central and good avenue for all your needs. There is large mall with good food court, supermarket, lots of night clubs and bars are in the streets surrounding the hostel, and it is not far away from the fort and main park where most of museums and interesting things are.

Sign for Friendlys Guesthouse is not easy to see, and you need to know the address. Office looking building has larger lobby with the elevator, and guesthouse occupies from third to fifth floor. Reception is on the fourth floor, and there is guard in the lobby that will tell you where to go. Guys on the reception are super nice, helpful and know their work. We got private room on the third floor, and that floor is shared with some tourist agency (not really helpful place to go anywhere if you don’t want to pay super overpriced deals) and some other place. While we were filling our registrations two girls were talking to the manager about stuff that was stolen from them. Apparently they checked in day before into private room, and someone got in through the balcony and has stolen their stuff. Later on that day I met another guy that is staying in Friendlys that lost his things too in the other room, and now he is waiting to get new passport…

After checking the possibility that someone can get in our room, I got impression that anyone can do it without much problems. Third floor does not have anyone guarding the entrance or controlling who gets up the stairs, and doors can open with a bit of push… To make story more interesting there are no lockers available in the "private rooms".

Room is small with double bed on the bottom and single on the top. Beds are comfortable and stable. Air-conditioning was fairly good and room did not smell too bad. Restrooms are in the good shape, and showers have hot water.

The best part of the hostel is balcony and living area on the fifth floor, where most of the people hang out during the day. Couple of desktop computers are available for 30PhP per hour and internet is ok most of the time. There is free WiFi on all three floors, and coffee and tea are free. Large kitchen has everything you need, and it is mostly used by people working in hostel to make all meals that they need.

We left the place after one day, but paid for two. Simply it was better to forfeit one night in hostel than loose all my belongings. I am not afraid of different places, but I could kind of feel that this place is not good for me. Friendlys was marketed on hostel websites and certain travel books as a “backpackers heaven” and place to go if you are in Manila, but I won’t go there again. There are other good and newer hostel options for the same price in the same area. Good Luck.

Affordable nice place in the heart of Manila Jun 12, 2011
Friendly's is a guesthouse/ hostel located in the heart of the backpacker tourist district in Manila, Philippines for budget travelers. My experience here was amazing, I showed up with a friend and left with many more to meet up with in the Philippines. This is a solo travelers haven if you are looking for people to travel with. Even if you are not alone it is a great place to meet like minded travelers. I would recommend that you are coming to manila at least go check it out and see if it is your kind of place.

A home away from home Apr 03, 2010
Friendly's is one of the most friendly guesthouses I've stayed at. Benjie, the owner, walk around and talk to everyone at the large common area making sure you are having a good time and is ready to help you in any way possible. He even serve free French red wine at Saturdays. The rooms are basic but clean and it is located in the middle of Malate so it's close to most everything a visitor is looking for.

I would stay here again if I ever comes to Manila

Friendly's Guesthouse Jul 07, 2008
In the middle of the Malate district in Manila you will find Friendly's Guesthouse at the top flours of a building on the corner of Andriatico and Nakpil. It is close to all bars and restaurants in the area and close to Remedios Circle. Hence if you want to participate in the nightlife of Manila you don't really get a better location. Of course being in this area mean you will also encounter a few of the more dodgy elements of Manila.

You can choose between rooms and dorms with or without aircon. The ones without do have fans hence you should be able to survive the night. On the top flour is a big common area with internet access a big TV with a selection of different DVDs you can watch if you like. There is a big kitchen if you like to do a bit of cooking yourself and the there is a roof terrace where you can sit talk and look down over Andriatico if you like.

You can buy some drinks at the hostel if you like and they offer limited travel advice to the most common destinations. The more exotic once - like Vigan - they don't have a clue how to get to.

Run by the fun, fabulous and friendly Filipino Benjie, this place is a must visit on any stop in Manila. Scrap plans for going to the tourist attractions and just spend all your time here - you'll have a blast, really! At this time of visit you could escape the stifling heat of Manila in the air con dorms for 250 peso a night - it has risen to 300 peso since, or if you wanted your privacy, a double with fan was going for 450 peso.

Located in the heart of Malate, all the major attractions are accessible by foot. On its doorstep you will also find a plethora of nightlife, places to eat and convenience stores. Every night of the week Benjie has a full stock of beer in his fridge that you can buy for a very reasonable 35 peso, but the main time to be here is a Saturday. Benjie throws a FREE wine and cheese appreciation night for all his guests and its one of the highlights of any stay in the Philippines... or at least it was for me!

Other added bonuses include internet access and a fully equipped kitchen - Benjie often cooks for his guests! There is a great communal area with cable TV and a large range of DVDs and also a free book swap. Nice! This really is a home away from home - go check it out and say hi to Benjie from Julia and I :)
Hostel life - FUN FUN FUN!
