Fresh Water Cave Mar 14, 2011
There are few caves on Utila, but I went only to this one because I found few friends to go with me.

Cave is around 3 km from the city, and you can get to it from the road that goes to the airport or dirt road that follows the coast.

When you pass the airport keep walking to the island's power station. Little, almost invisible path on the right 10m before entrance to the power station is the one to follow. After around 50m walking into the forest, you'll see hole that was once larger cave, but now obviously collapsed. Entrance to the existing cave is small and right under wooden ladder.

Be prepared to crawl in mud, sweat, and bring some light source, because it is DARK down there. Do not go in if you have problems with your knees or claustrophobia, because you wont have any fun (nor the people that have to take you out from there).

Cave is around 40-50m long and in the end opens to a bit larger dome 5x5m with height of around 2.5m.

On the right side of the "path" there is underground fresh water lake. You can jump in it in the end of the cave, but do not try to dive around.

You are right, and I will write about bat caves too :)
There are few other caves and they go underwater so they are not safe to enter...

I know of two caves and I heard that there are other caves that are on private property. The two popular caves is the one you describe here called the "Freshwater cave" and another that is often called the "bat cave."

The bat cave is a cool cave that opens up to large caverns with lots of bats flying around.
