Perth - A Locals View May 30, 2011
Perth is a visually beautiful city, nestled on the banks of the Swan River in Western Australia. The Swan river was the lifeline of this sunny city in the early years, where the English settlers established the Swan River Penal colony in 1829.

The Swan River these days is not much more than a water feature in Perth, as it doesnt provide much more than the ways of transportation, recreation and of course some magic scenery. The Swan river flows from the North Eastern Hills to the mouth in our Harbour city of Fremantle, meandering through the suburbs and straight past where the CBD currently lies.

Overlooking Perth's CBD and Swan River is the beautiful, Kings Park. One of the few areas of untouched national parks left in the CBD of any city in the world. The "peak" of Kings Park is called Mt Eliza named after the wife of the Governer of New South Wales at the time. It was said by the Surveyor General John Septimus Roe in 1832 that this area of Mt Eliza would be preserved for public recreation, thus disallowing the cutting of trees on the land. These days Kings Park is used by the public for alot of activities including sports, picnics, sight-seeing, walking, jogging, cycling and generally having a good time outdoors. It is also home to Perth's War Memorials and can have up to 40,000 people for the special memorial services on ANZAC Day. Kings Park is a must see if you are in Perth.... Youll be blown away by its beauty. It holds a special place in the hearts of the Western Australian people.(More on Kings Park can be found at

Fremantle is Perth's port city, its a mix of shipyards, fishing boat harbours, trendy shopping and cafe districts and pubs and clubs. It has quite a history in the area of maritime and of the early convict settlers. A must do is a tour of the old Fremantle Prison which has been there since the very beginning, build solely by convict labour, other must-sees are "The Round House", the maritime museum and who can forget the statue of the legendary Bon Scott (Deceased ACDC Lead Singer) who grew up in this area, and is buried at Fremantle cemetary. After all this exploring I recommend going for a Pint and a Pizza at the Little Creatures Brewery all while you watch the Sun go down over the Fishing Boat harbour and the Swan Brewery, or if Fish and Chips is your style then check out Cicerellos next door, a food institution in "Freo". (More Info on Freo can be found at

Fremantle Markets. Jan 02, 2011
The Fremantle Markets were built in 1897. There are over 150 stalls in the market complex, containing cafes, clothing stores, produce, arts, and many more.

The markets are open 8am to 9pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And every Monday which falls on a public holiday.

The markets are a most do when ever you visit Fremantle. Its full of many interesting things, good organic produce that you can taste before you buy. The cafe is located in the heart of the market, and is a great place to sit down and have a drink and rest between shopping - although those who are on a budget would be better going elsewhere because the price is above average.
