The Fremantle Arts Centre is one of those most important cultural organisations in Western Australia. General admittance is free, except during important exhibitions of musical performances.

The centre was built using convict labor between 1861 and 1868, when it was used as a psychiatric hospital, initially called the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum, and later known as the Asylum for the Criminally Insane.

With over 200,000 visitors a year, Fremantle Arts Centre (FAC) offers a varied program of exhibitions and events, often attracting audiences of 3000 or more to outdoor concerts in summer. Artists and bands who have performed at the Arts Centre include: Elvis Costello, John Butler, The Waifs, Morcheeba, The Black Keys, Paul Kelly, Cat Empire, Angus & Julia Stone, Paul Weller, Tegan and Sarah, Josh Pyke, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Stereophonics, The Polyphonic Spree, Eskimo Joe, Death Cab for Cutie, Pete Murray, Swell Season, The Herd, Stray Cats, Sarah Blasko, The Indigo Girls, Xavier Rudd, Weddings Parties Anything, Damien Rice, Lucky Oceans and Groove Armada. The centre is believed to be haunted by several ghosts from its days as asylum days. One of these is said to be a former female inmate who became deranged with grief after her daughter was abducted. She is believed to have jumped to her death from a first floor window. The woman's ghost has apparently been seen throughout the building while she searches for her daughter. Due to the countless spiritual encounters, Fremantle Arts Centre is known as the most haunted building in the Southern Hemisphere.[3] Many claim they have heard screams while visiting the building, or have heard footsteps in empty rooms (wikipedia - Fremantle Arts Centre).
