Swimming and Sunbathing - Beautiful Lake, Beach and Park in the City Jul 31, 2011
Highly recommended, if the heat of the City gets too much in the Summer; an area of outstanding natural beauty in which to relax and recharge.

Berlin has many lakes formed from the melting of icebergs from the ice age, this being one of the most central, beautiful and well-equiped.

Enjoy sunbathing on the sandy beach and swimming in the lake. The water is warm on hot days, but still refreshing. The water quality is excellent and monitored by the Berliner Freibäder Betriebe. It's clear, with lots of fish visible in the shallow parts.

The area is popular with all ages, there are lots of facilities for children/families too. There is a nudist area at the far left end of the beach, beyond a fenced screen.

On the beach, there is a really lovely bar/club, with tables and seating on a open wooden deck, 7beach(see link above). There's also a grill/barbecue on at lunch-times and you can buy crêpes there.

Next to the open decked area, there's a chic canopied deck with comfy rattan chairs and a jacuzzi sunk in the middle of the floor. This is the VIP area and is rented out in the evenings for private parties, but during the day if the area isn't reserved, you can enjoy a beer or white wine there.

Entrance charge to Freibad Plötzensee is 4 Euros per adult, and you can get a family day card for 9 Euros. There are toilets, a shower block/changing area and locker room, as well as various fast food and grill outlets. In the park areas there's a children's playground. The beach also has rope climbing frames, basketball hoops and volleyball nets.

Although popular with locals, I heard quite a few American accents. I don't think you would have a problem, if you didn't speak German.

Plötzensee is a green oasis in the middle of the city, in the district of Wedding. A 15-20 minute walk from the S-Bahn at Beusselstraße.

Once over the zebra crossing on Seestraße, if instead of bearing left along Nordufer toward Freibad Plötzensee, you go straight ahead into the park and down a small slope, you will see a sign for a bar. Go through the doorway and it takes you to a charming boathouse, which doubles as a small café/bar.

Even if you don't plan to hire a boat, it's worth a visit, as you can sit in the sun or the shade with a drink enjoying beautiful views of the lake - very romantic at the end of the day, just before the sun starts to set. The woman who serves food and drink is a bit surly, but then so are a lot of Berliners.

Situated in the Wedding district of Berlin.
