The Religious Art of Japan Permanent Exhibition Jul 04, 2012
Traveling with family poses its own set of challenges. My 11 year old daughter has such a high demand for entertainment that touring the museums was made easier with the interactive activities provided by the different museums. I particularly liked the Freer Gallery one because they actually have a whole calendar of events for children. They also offer a rich program of free Asia-related films and concerts (well we did not attend any), you can attend.

The Gallery has an internationally renown collection of Asian art.

The gallery was named after the Detroit industrialist Charles Freer who donated 7,500 sculptures, paintings and drawings to the Smithsonian Institution. Today the collection of art pieces exceeds 25,000 and growing.

The Peacock Room exhibition is a must see; nothing like it anywhere in the nation. Running through the spring of 2013, the Peacock room was restored to its 1908 appearance when it was owned by Charles Lang Freer himself.

On Permanent exhibition is the collection of ancient Chinese Bronzes and Jades. They are interesting to see and one would not expect to find them outside of China, I wonder what the Chinese government has to say about them, seeing as they look like rare artifacts the country would like in their own archives.

My favorite was the permanent exhibition of 'The Religious Art of Japan'. The beautifully displayed representation of the Guardians of the four directions left me in awe. The serenely poised image of the bodhisattva the enlightened being brings to one the feeling of peace as well.

I highly recommend spending time here. Unfortunately no photographs are allowed, but the images remain in your mind’s eye.

Hours of operation: Opened daily from 10:00 am - 5:30 pm, closed on December 25.
