Free train from Geneva airport. Jan 22, 2017
While Geneva is generally an expensive city for tourists to visit, one aspect of the city that offers remarkably good value for money is its public transport system.

In fact, for many tourists, much of the public transport is FREE.

This starts when you first arrive at Geneva airport. All passengers arriving in Geneva by plane are entitled to a free train ticket into the centre of the city!

This ticket can be obtained from a machine in the baggage collection hall. Simply press the button and take a free ticket. (See attached photos).

We made our way to the airport’s train station and noted that all departing trains were stopping at Geneva’s central Cornavin station en route to their final destinations. We asked a security guard if we were ok to use the free ticket on any train (we didn’t want to fall foul of the rules and accidentally board an ineligible train) and he confirmed that we could.

At the time of our arrival (around 10:00am on a Saturday morning), trains were departing every 5-10 minutes. The journey time to Cornavin station is a mere 6 minutes.

From Cornavin station we were able to walk to our hotel within 5 minutes. However, had we been staying further away from the station, we could have used our free transport ticket to continue our journey by tram, bus or mouette (yellow water taxi). The free ticket is valid for 80 minutes and can be used throughout transport zone 10 (which covers the wider city of Geneva).

The key thing to remember is to collect your free ticket from the machine before leaving the baggage collection hall!

The free transport was a very nice bonus! :-)
Especially the little yellow taxi boats that ply Lake Geneva. We spent a little while riding the boats back and forth, saving on the cost of an expensive sightseeing trip! :-)

Typical for Switzerland. Some things are free, others outrageously expensive. Good to know!

The free transport just about made up for the fact that I could barely afford to eat and drink in Geneva! ;-)
