London on the cheap Mar 31, 2008
I actually have a blog about this called "London on the Cheap", but I thought I would put it in travel tips as well.
This is the short version:
1) Eating and Drinking
For a cheap night out as far as food, you should try to find a JD Wetherspoons. It is a chain, and usually has names like Misty Moon, or Moon Over Water, but when you find one you will be in for a treat as far as prices and service. Pints of beer and cider are as low as £1.50, while you can get a beer and burger for around £4. This is extremely cheap for London. Spirits are cheap as well, and so are their steaks, curry dinners, and breakfast. You can find a local one using their site: www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk
Also, if you are going grocery shopping, you should go to Sainsbury's and Tesco.
Primark and H&M are going to be prime for cheap clothes. Office is a shoe store, and they usually have sales going on. Camden Market is a really good place to find cool clothes, and t-shirts can go as low as £5. Portobello Road is good for so called antiques.
3) Night life
If you can, you should try to go to Hoxton/Brick Lane Area in East London by Old Street. These are both areas by Shoreditch High Street. There are so many places you can get into for free such as Hoxton Bar & Kitchen (one of my personal favorites. It doesn't sound like a club, but there's a big dance floor and stage with DJ's on the tables Saturday and Sunday, and live music on Friday). Other places include:
Trafic (I think, you may want to check)
Cantaloupe (though it's not really a club, just somewhere to chill)
And so many others. If you can't find a place, just ask a fellow clubber on the street if they know.
4) Free things (www.londonisfree.com)
This site lays out many free things to do in the city. Book signing, exhibits, concerts, films, and more.
