Fraser Suites Hanoi Jun 06, 2012
Suitable for those on holiday, or those on long term business travel to hanoi. Not suitable for those on short term business travel.

When my colleague told me she booked this hotel, I was happy cos I finally get to write a review for a different hotel in Hanoi. I knew I was getting the studio room, which I thought is nice and interesting. But when I got here, I realized, it's really not suitable for business travelers, well, at least not for me.

When I arrived at this hotel, I loved the fact that there's a small mall linked to it. Not bad! Then entrance and lobby is also very clean and impressive. And then I was told that I was assigned to a room on the first floor. I thought first floor means 1 level above ground. But he directed me to the basement instead!! This hotel is located near the popular Hanoi westlake, so if you book this place for the lake view, make sure you request for a high level, not the basement!!

The studio is nice and clean, a typical studio you see in any other hotels. Why I said it's not so suitable for travelers?

- This studio comes with a kitchen and washing machine. As a business traveler, do you even bother to cook or wash your clothes? We obviously prefer to have them cleaned by the laundrette and have them nicely pressed. We're here for business, not shifting our daily routine to a different country.

- I was surprised and impressed to see a mini home theatre system in the studio, complete with flat screen TV, speakers and DVD player. Business travelers don't watch CNN or bloomberg with surround sound, nor do they need to watch conference DVD on big screen.

- Business travelers have many electronic gadgets to charge i.e laptops, blackberries, etc. But they just had to place the power sockets under the desk. No, business travelers don't bring along their kids just to ask them to crawl under the desk.

- Busy business people are always on the go. Everything has to be quick, preferably touch and go, and not happily cooking pasta in the kitchen. No complimentary mineral water bottles available. Thirsty? Drink from the tap, or boil it and wait at least half an hour for the water to cool down.

Although I said this studio room is not so suitable for business travelers, it got me thinking if this is suitable for those on vacation. Imagine you're on holiday and you wake up in the morning, looking fresh, all ready to start the new day. Then you draw the curtains, hoping to see a nice scenery. But all you see is the cars parked at the basement. There's a window next to the shower area/bathtub. And the window opens up to the road... HUH?!!?? This room is big enough to fit minimum 2 persons, but only 1 pair of indoor slippers provided. Maybe they expect solo travelers. Make sure you don't open your door for too long too, cos the porter sent me my luggage and along came 2 mosquitos ascorting him. Make wsure your curtains are drawn all the time cos you wouldn't want to look like a moving manequinn on display in the window.

Ok, it's really not all that bad. This studio room was newly built, to accomodate the high occupancy rate. Usually they charge a fee for wi-fi, but I got this one for free. It has a broadband too. You have a shoe cabinet and an umbrella provided. (well they have to provide cos if it rains, you can't be running in the rain to their lobby!) You also get 10-15% discount if you shop at the nearby mall. And there's also free shuttle to downtown.

Anyhow, I had a strange feeling about this place. One part of it is like a boutique hotel, one part of it looks like your neighbourhood, and inside looks like a studio apartment. Perhaps next time I should try staying in the upper floors. Overall, I still prefer a 'normal' hotel if I'm on business.

p/s - the master control for the lights in the room is near the kitchen, instead of next to the bed. hmmm...
