The Franz Josef glacier (Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori) located is in Westland National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Due to the massive rainfall in the Southern Alps (making it a rapid-feed glacier, ten times faster than most glaciers) the leading edge of the glacier goes down to just 240 metres above sea level, and cuts into a lush temperate rainforest. You can go for a toured ice-hike on the glacier, with guides that keep you safe and carve stairs into the glacier front. For a lot more money you can get dropped off by helicopter onto the top of the glacier and hike around up there. The colours of the ice are amazing.
