Nice cabins for when you don't want to camp Apr 28, 2012
Foxtail Cabins are located on the north side of Lake Rathbun, near Honey Creek State Park and Honey Creek Resort State Park in southern Iowa. We were in the area for a large event and we decided not to chance camping at the end of April. It was a good decision because it rained/stormed both nights we were there and it was windy. The little cabins are sturdy.

Foxtail Cabins consist of several different sized cabins from studio to 3 bedroom. The cabins all come with a kitchen and tableware, tv, fridge, microwave, oven, etc, and some sort of living room setup. There is shared wireless internet here, but the signal was weak at our cabin. The cabins have campfire pits, and a shared gazebo, playground, and stocked pond.

We arrived very late and there was no "check in". Turns out there is a keypad on your door and you use part of your phone number to get in. No keys to worry about, and no registration hours.

We had a studio cabin with single bunk beds and 2 recliners. I ended up on the floor on an air mattress, but there was plenty of room for 3 of us. The bathroom was a little small, with only a shower, toilet and small sink. The cabin overall was very nice and clean. The cabin has a very small water heater (4 gallons?) so you need to take quick showers and space them out.

There were dishes for 4, but only silverware for 2. And 2 recliners, 2 chairs at the table. But we planned ahead and brought extras. Well, not an extra recliner anyway. Bed linens, towels, dish towels, and cleaning supplies are provided. A minimum of 2 night stay is required.

Our friends were next door in a 1-bedroom cabin that was a double bed on bottom and a single bunk on top. They had a full bathroom with tub and a futon. We all had a tv, but we never turned ours on.

I would definitely stay here again, especially if it were closer to my home. This area is a recreational area with several parks, a lake, and several campgrounds. The campgrounds also looked nice, but I'm glad I was here with the rainy weather.
