Glaciers in abundance

Blimey it's chilly here, I wonder why... so happy I bought thick ski gloves and a a wooly hat when I was on Waiheke Island. I havn't actually seen a glacier before but now I've seen both St Josef and Fox Glacier. I think Fow was best as you could get fairly close (without paying to do a climb anyways). I didn't have to much time here as I was trying to move down to Queestown as I have a bungy jump there so I bought a pizza and a magazine with the latest NZ gossip and turned my car into a a r…

Firstly we drove to Franz Joseph Glacier as we were undecided which Glacier to walk on, but in the end we decided to go on Fox Glacier as it was slightly cheaper and nearer to Queenstown our next destination. As we had some time to spare we walked to the bottom of Franz Glacier, along with several hundred other tourists and some really annoying children. The Glacier was not how I expected at all as it was next to the rainforest and there was no snow around. In Chilie, when we saw the glacier …

Not to be too down by the disappointing penguin sighting at Dunedin or the cancellation of Milford Sound, I arrived at Fox Glacier eagerly anticipating the next morning's helicoper flight over the glaciers and Mount Cook.  But while the afternoon weather was nice, fresh clouds started rolling in that evening and I had a forboding feeling that I would be stymied by the weather gods once again - a feeling unfortunately justifed the next day.  I awoke to a raging st…

New Zealand... the adrenaline capital of the world as it sometimes is called. Spent this 3 week trip with one of my best college buddies. Zipped around both islands as quickly as we could to see as much as we could. Started in the Bay of Islands of the North Island and finished in the Milford Sound in the South Island after the Milford Track. Everyday a new adventure :)

I went for a run this morning, I know totally mad....was feeling lazy as Kieran had been running most mornings - 20 mins - bloody hard work.  Lots of the walks to Franz Joseph were shut due to bad weather, so did the short drive to Fox Glacier, from here we walked to the base of the Glacier, really impressive, amazing to look at. Decided to stay in Fox Glacier for the night, I went into the local pub to use the toilets and it was so nice and cosy with a log fire that I pursuaded Kie…

(Jan) Moved rooms into hostel - 1/3 cheaper and we were using their kitchen and laundry facilities anyway. Hired bikes. Mmmmm ......... (Rob) Started off dry, a little overcast perhaps but not enough uncertainty to derter us from cycling from the town to Gillespie beach about 12 miles away. Bumpy ride over gravelly surfaces, and the bikes were in a pretty poor state - breaks in particular very dodgy! Arrived at seashore about lunchtime. Almost surreal in appearance; huge tree trunks scatte…

The fox glacier, a glacier to climb.
posted by:

What to do. That was the question this morning. I had the choice of going to climb the glacier to the top, this would take all day, or choose for the half day walk and just walk 1 hour on the glacier. I go for the half day walk together with Rudy and Ella. We left at 9 and we drove just 30 minutes and were there at a parking spot. Because we were only 3 we would join another group of 7, I think. The first hour we had to walk to the glacier over a normal "road". Then there was a climb along th…
