Oldest urban funicular in the world Feb 27, 2016
The funiculars of Lyon are the oldest urban ones in the world and celebrated 150 years of operation in 2012, encompassing the years 1862-2012. Originally there were five lines, but only two exist now to Fourviere Hill. Both of these funicular lines are accessible from the metro station Saint-Jean. There is nothing antique about the funicular, except the path maybe. It's a fairly modern station with relatively new track and cable cars. More a curiosity as the oldest urban funicular in the world. Modernized though it is, there is some historical perspective here to be appreciated. There are some interesting displays in the station with historical photos and some narrative (all in French) to add commentary. One doesn't really need to understand the commentary all that much, and just a bit of understanding along with the photos tells a story that can be gathered here. Maybe it's an experience to be enjoyed rather than understood.
