Fourviere Fantastique Feb 27, 2016
Cities in France are often divided into arrondissements or districts. Fourviere is the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, made official in 1852 as part of the first five designated as such. The boundaries have changed since that time, and don't quite follow the logic that maybe Paris has. In Lyon, as populations grew, the arrondissements split, giving it a rather random appearance it has today.

The Fourviere area of Lyon, located on a hill rising up above the Saone River, and overlooking modern day Lyon, is one of the great places to visit in this fine city. Fouviere comes from the Latin forum vetus (old forum) since it was the original Roman settlement here called Lugdunum in the 1st century BC. Roman Emperors Claudius and Caracalla were born here. Lyon is a very old city and one time center of ancient Gaul, which included France, Belgium, Luxembourg and parts of the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

It's a mix of modern, ancient and in-between up here on Fourviere. Pleasant streets to meander up and down the hilly area with ancient stonework remnants here and there. Enjoy that for the perspective and major sights include Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Tour métallique de Fourvière, and nearby to these, a Roman amphitheater and ruins. Some of the best views of the modern city Lyon can be seen from atop Fourvière, but other views can be appreciated in ascending or descending the hilltop.

For quick ascent or descent here, use the funicular (the oldest urban one in existence). For leisure, exercise or photography, use the steps. There are several of these to choose from is ascent or descent - choose according to your preference.
