Peaceful country getaway just outside city Apr 01, 2013
We took a taxi from Oxford train station to the hotel which took around 10-15 minutes. This is the further of the 2 four pillars hotels from the city centre so make sure you (or taxi driver) have the correct one.

The initial impressions when arriving to the grounds of the hotel were very good, especially because there was a collection of classic cars parked in front of reception entrance, but unfortunately these are not a permanent feature. We arrived earlier than expected and we found the reception by walking through the spectacular lounge. The man on reception who greeted us was very pleasant and despite being half hour earlier than check-in the room was ready for us.

To get to our room we were directed around the courtyard and passed the entrance to the leisure facilities. The atmosphere was very relaxed and significantly quiet by our room on the first floor. We had booked a twin room and was probably the cheapest option available at the hotel, however it was very spacious and comfortable. Despite being the more basic option there were plenty of creature comforts to distinguish the room from a budget establishment. A simple key card unlocks the door and it was time to put the kettle on! I always appreciate accommodation with the facilities in my room to prepare a tea and coffee at any time.

Our view from the window overlooked the hotel grounds towards the village of Sandford and the room was often filled with natural light and sunshine. The beds were high quality, very clean and well prepared, perfect for a good nights sleep. I was very aware too of how quiet it was throughout the day and more importantly at night. Plenty of pillows and extra blankets were provided in the room, although we didn't find this necessary. On the first evening the room was slightly cool, but all we needed to do was adjust the radiator to a higher level and for the next few evenings of our stay we were lovely and warm.

The en-suite bathroom was also very well kept and spotless. Complimentary lotions, soap, shower cap and shower gels are provided. The bath/shower combination had a long shower curtain which made things look a bit shabby but it did the job. A reasonably powerful shower with constant temperatures followed by some large soft towels, which will be replaced daily. Everything was well stocked and the maids do a very good job at keeping everything clean. Other amenities in our room included two large wardrobes, iron & board, trouser press, hairdryer, desk, telephone and TV. The only thing lacking from the room in our opinion was a fridge or mini-bar.

We used the leisure facilities a number of times during our stay. As guests of the hotel you are allowed free access to the on-site health club. The staff here are friendly too and after signing in the book with your room number etc we were shown what was available. The changing rooms are quite small and can be a little awkward at busy times, but it was very clean and all shower were working etc. Lockers and plastic bags are provided as well as a towel on entry.

The pool itself is a little small for doing lengths, I think I counted about 8 breaststrokes to get from one end to the other. Also it's 1.2M deep throughout the whole pool, so there is no diving or jumping at all. Having said this, it is perfect to do some gentle up and downs to relax and the ancient Greek/Roman style d├ęcor and underwater lighting is a nice touch. Just beside the pool is a jacuzzi which was always lovely and warm and houses about 4/5 people comfortably. The spa also offers a steam room and a sauna which I thought was invigorating, especially if you use the spa before breakfast, I believe the health club is open from 7am. On the second floor is the gym, with a room for cardiovascular and aerobic exercise and the other for weight training. Although it's not a huge club, there is enough to have a good workout and is a splendid additional feature for the guests to enjoy.

The grounds of the hotel are pleasant to take a stroll in and of course the main feature is the river Thames that flows passed at the bottom end. Although we stayed here in March the weather was fine and I can imagine in the warm summer it would be special to sit by the water with a cool drink. The hotel also has a boat moored up and it looks like it is used for party/wedding events. Indeed there was a wedding gathering during our stay but in no way did it affect our experience.

We did not eat at the hotel restaurant because we preferred to try some places in Oxford, but we had one dinner in the bar area of the lounge. I must admit the service was not so good from the staff on this occasion, because it was not busy and we felt things were too relaxed and we could have been left unattended all evening. The prices are a little high, in particular the drinks, but the food was extremely desirable.

Overall this is a high calibre hotel. If you are looking for a country retreat that is not too far from the attractions of a city then this is perfect.
