Marvellous Ruined Abbey Nov 10, 2013
Perhaps best known to the casual observer as the place where the 'History Boys' visited in the film adaptation of Alan Bennett's play, Fountains Abbey is a very impressive ruined Cistercian Monastery, and a World Heritage site.

Set in acres of rolling countryside, plus the nearby Studley Royal Water Garden, the imposing remains of the once impressive monastery still manage to evoke a real sense of religious reverence. Not escaping the notorious dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII, knowledgeable guides help bring the ruins alive, and the views of the abbey itself (including some interesting architecture features) and the surrounding countryside are definitely worth the price of admission.

Situated between Ripon and Harrogate, the abbey can be reached by car or bus.

One of the best Oct 28, 2010
Fountains Abbey is one of the best abbey ruins in Yorkshire - which means in all the UK. I'm sorry I can's locate any photos at the moment but, if you play with the website, you can see what I mean. It was a Cistercian establishment.

At the time of the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, it was the largest and wealthiest in Northern England. The ruins include the oldest surviving Cistercian water mill as well as many lay and religious buildings. How could anybody destroy it at a time when most were religious? I am not religious but I find it an act of outrageous vandalism.

If you have any choice in the matter of when to see it, come in Autumn and walk through the gardens of Studeley Royal, where some of the trees adopt amazing reds reminiscent of the American east. Both Fountains and Studeley elong to the national Trust and they now have a major reception centre where you can get a meal or a snack.
