See 130 million year old fossils May 26, 2017
The Fossil Discovery Exhibit in Big Bend National Park is one of the parks newest attractions having opened in just January 2017. The exhibit is located 8 miles north of Panther Junction along the Persimmon Gap access road also known as U.S. Highway 385. The exhibit includes a large display showing some of the fossils found in this area, with informative signs that educate you about how the area looked, and the animals who lived here, some 130 million years ago. Fascinating for any budding, or amateur, paleontologists. They also have displays that show you how the fossils looked when they were first discovered and before they were removed from the soil containing them. Fossils include aquatic animals like a scary looking fish called a Xiphactinus; turtles, mammals, and dinosaurs including an Agujaceratops head and a skeleton of a large flying dinosaur. There is also a short trail to an observation point where you can view the areas where the fossils were found. Great attraction for kids of all ages.
