Great location but that's about it May 15, 2012
This hotel is in an awesome location, about 5km south of Skaftafell Park at the foot of Hvannadalshnúkur: The highest mountain in Iceland. What a backdrop. Unfortunately, the amazing 1st impression ends there. The building itself looks like a boring barracks and all of the rooms face the OTHER way from the mountain and glacier! (Why???)

It's like a pre-fabricated building from the 70's and it looks like all the carpets and furnishings are from that era too. The room was tiny by any standards with barely enough room on either side of the bed to get by and no place to stow a 2nd suitcase in the room without having the door bang into it. The bed was okay but nothing special.

The bathroom was also super-tiny and basic, but everything worked okay. Lucky I'm not a big guy or I wouldn't have been able to turn around in the pokey shower stall. At least the water got super hot and the room was clean.

There was wifi throughout the hotel but they charged 500ISK/ hour to use it! Come on now... There's a PC in the lobby with an Icelandic keyboard that guests can use for "free" but you can't access social media sites on it (like TravBuddy! BOO!) No coffee maker in the room and they charged us for coffee and tea at the restaurant to bring back to the room. (That's just dirty, guys!) The ultimate insult is that this place charged the equivalent of about $200CDN/ night! Ouch.

Breakfast was included but was nothing special. We had dinner at the gas-station cafe across the street as I didn't want to give these guys another dime for the gouging that they had already delivered.

There is a hiking trail (about 20 minutes each way) that leads to a glacier directly behind this ugly and overpriced hotel.

Although it's very convenient if you want to spend time at Skaftafell Park, you're probably better served by making a but of a further drive away for a better and more affordable hotel. FAIL!
