Ships ships and maritime ships May 06, 2012
The Forum Marinum is located very close to the Castle in Turku and has a museum exhibition, a maritime center, a shop and a small cafe called "Restaurant Daphne". The cafe serves some delicaties and a small, varied buffet lunch. The Museum Shop offers maritime gifts and other articles, literature and some textiles.

The musuem has a large boat collection. Among them two tall sail ships, four naval ships and several smaller vessels, ranging from a steam harbour tugboat to a police boat. The museum ships are open during the summer months only, while the exhibitions are open throughout the year.

I went here uncertain of what to expect. Several colleagues has been there before and some loved it, others said it was boring. Guess it's up to you wether your interrested in maritime ships and historiy or not.

I personally found most of it a bit boring and ran through most of the museum in 15 minutes, but stayed and had a better look at the navel war exhibit with seamines and some old weapons. I found this a bit more interresting as I have worked a lot with these things as a part of my job on board a Norwegian MCMV (Mine Counter Measure Vessel) in the Navy.

If your up for looking at old outboard engines, some old pictures of steamships and wander around a couple of ships this might be for you. :)
