Brighton's busiest beachfront bar Mar 23, 2012
Situated where central Brighton meets the seafront the Fortune of War is arguably the best positioned pub in Brighton for the summer season.

This is reflected in how busy it can get when the sun shines and the temperature shows any signs of climbing above 15C. To be fair; this in Britain brings everyone out in shorts and swim wear.

The pub is situated on the seafront promenade and is arranged over 2 floors, there is a large beer garden with benches set up opposite that lead down to the beach. On a sunny day you can sit outside and get a tan or if you prefer shade you can sit upstairs by the windows and still get a great view of the coast line and people watch whilst drinking that cold pint.

The pub decor is striking and apparently built from salvaged parts from the shipwreck of the fortune of war(ship). The pub will serve you in plastic cups, so if you can't find a table you can always make your way down to a free spot on the beach with your drinks.

It's popularity is both a blessing and a curse, while it's nice to be in a lively place it can reach that stage where it's overcrowded and it takes a very long time to served at the bar and the chances of finding places anywhere near the pub are nil. When it's busy the toilets can end up being quite a state and I'd avoid wearing flip flops or beach shoes when using them as they are not maintained nearly as much as they should as all the staff are trying to keep up with the busy bar. Aside from the usual bar snacks the pub doesn't offer any food.

The pub does play a good selection of chill out music and occasionally have live music and DJs too. The music is always pretty good and is at a level where you don't have to shout to talk to your friends.

It is also worth noting that the drinks here are expensive. While this is comparable to the other nearby beach front bars this still makes it one of the most expensive if not the priciest place to buy a drink in Brighton (yes, that even includes Browns). This is worth noting as if it's crowded and you're going to be on the beach, you could quite easily pick up a few of the same drinks from the supermarket at a fraction of the cost and sit on the same strip of beach outside for free.

With the fortune you are paying for the atmosphere and if you're not even sitting in the pub or beer garden you can't help but feel a little bothered by the high drink prices. I'd recommend the fortune of war to anyone visiting Brighton for a good beach experience but when I go I always take a couple of beers of my own just in case the pub is full.
