Go Searching for Koalas Jan 08, 2013
The Forts Walk/hike on Magnetic Island is a moderate walk through a forest where you can spot Koalas in their natural environment. It takes about 2 hours, depending on the speed at which you walk. When you get off the ferry from Townsville there is a bus waiting that takes people to different spots around the island. The day pass on the bus is $7. The driver will drop you off at a stop where the entrance to the Forts Walk is just across the road.

Bring plenty of water, regardless of the weather. There are no shops around. We went through a lot of water even though the weather wasn't sunny when we went.

The best time to do the walk is either early in the morning or in the afternoon as the heat is lesser at both of those times and the Koalas do not move when it's too hot, according to the lady at our hostel (i didn't notice them moving at all even though it was relatively cold when we went!).

The incline of the walk is uphill as you approach the remnants of a WW2 army base fortifications. Along the track you can spot Koalas sitting and sleeping in the upper sections of the trees. They are difficult to spot as they blend into their surroundings so you have to walk slowly and keep your eyes peeled for the elusive, cuddly creatures. We saw three. Apparently in mating season they sleep in the trees so close to the walking track that you can touch them and they still don't even move! If you can't spot them try asking other people on the walk, that's what we did! We wouldn't have seen a single one otherwise!

The abandoned former WW2 infrastructure at the top of the hill offers breathtaking views over the island. There are multiple viewpoints located throughout the walk. The most beautiful one is from the lookout tower. These structures stand forlorn and forgotten at the summit of the hill.
