Bourtzi, An Islet Attraction Mar 24, 2012
Half mile away from the shore of Nafplion is where you can find the Fortress of Bourtzi.Though the fortress is clearly visible from the port, the details of the structure can not be completely viewed so a boat ride for about five minutes is recommendable. Its close proximity from the shore is another reason why the visitors and tourists were encouraged to have it visited.

(According to history, its fortification was completed in 1473 and was used as fortress to protect the city from pirates and invaders). The giant fortress has an Italian renaissance structure, good enough to serve as defensive shack.

There is a small cafe where visitors can sit and have a cup of coffee with the relaxing view of Nafplion city and the Palamidi castle on the hill. The fortress is open from 3 pm to midnight. I've visited Bourtzi at late in the afternoon but according to the caretaker there, the structure is fully illuminated at night.

Though the fortress is open the whole year round, it is more advisable to get there during summer time - when the sea is calm and the water current is fair enough.
