A nice fortress town with the museum and grave of Comenius Dec 03, 2012
This historic town is situated about 25 km (15 miles) east from Amsterdam. I took a train to Naarden-Bussum and walked about 2 km (1,5 miles) to Naarden, as the station is located in Bussum.

The town itself is fortificated star shaped and based on water. As the town was attacked by foreign invaders in the past, this had also a protective character. It is possible to visit the Fortress museum (www.vestingmuseum.nl/1469/Location).

Another interesting place in Naarden is Comenius mausoleum and museum in Klosterstraat. This Czech teacher found asylum in the Netherlands during the 30 years war (1618 - 1648) in the time of the religious clashes in Europe. However even after the Peace of Westphalia (1648), he wasn't allowed to return to Bohemia and spent the rest of his life in the Netherlands.

This is just a tip for a short stay close to Amsterdam. The location is really great, I can recommend a visit.
