Fortina Spa Resort Sliema Reviews
Fantastic view of the Marsamxett Harbor of Malta Dec 08, 2010
We stayed at the Fortina Spa Resort in Sliema for our first trip to Malta in December 2010. It was a good hotel but could be improved. We enjoyed the magnificent views of Valletta and the picturesque Marsamxett Harbor, as well as the spa activities--which would be best on rainy days if they ever had any.
Fortina Spa Resort is a 5-star hotel and is adjacent to the older Hotel Fortina which is a 4-star hotel at the end of the street on Tignè Point in Sliema, Malta. Both Fortina hotels have a great view of Malta's Capital of Valletta and Marsamxett Harbour.
We recommend staying above the 5th floor since our 3rd floor view was partially blocked by a new suspension walk bridge recently constructed at Tignè Point Mall adjacent to the hotel.
WARNING: The walking suspension bridge to the Tignè Point Mall in front of the Fortina Spa Resort is new and a bit dangerous. It is not well lit (even with seasonal Christmas lights on it) and we saw one person fall on the stairs requiring an ambulance to take her to the hospital. There was also lots of blood left on the stairs which made it even more slippery--be careful on these stairs across from the hotel!
The spa is very large but a clear single "reception area" is not well defined. A spa pedi/mani "drying area" is needed for the ladies. The booking of spa treatments was very confusing when considering free services included with your room rate, pay for fee services and "all inclusive" services. There is also diffrent hours for appointments or walk-ins for these services, but the spa is open from 0900-1900.
We were disappointed with the front desk area and staff for such a beautiful 5-star hotel. Front desk reception seemed inefficient or mismanaged, undermanned (although we were there during the off-season), and the staff had no "visual presence" to greet guests with questions or to check in. We were dissatisfied that we had to wait for the single desk clerk to book tours for another guest while we waited to check in to our room.
The hotel boasts several good restaurants, including one for buffet breakfast included, however, do not pay attention to the "please wait to be seated sign" because you will never be greeted or seated.
+ Fantastic view and location
+ Balcony with hibiscus flowered plants and lounge chairs
+ Bar and mini-bar
+ Full service spa
+ Free Harbor Cruise included with room
+ Close to shopping mall, street shops, restaurants and a pexiglass "ice rink" for skating
+ Nice/freindly housekeeping staff
- View partially obstructed below floor 5
- Spa needs a clear reception area
- Lobby wireless computer "goes out often" without repair
- Hump in middle of bed
- Housekeeping was inconsistent and called at 1000 one morning while "do not disturb" sign was up
- Our room lacked robes/slippers, TP, towels, glassware off/on during entire stay
- Need "calendar of events" for the local area with festivals/fireworks shows
- Mini-bar needs snacks and Diet Coke
- Front desk staff not as friendly as housekeeping staff
WARNING FOR EXPEDIA.COM BOOKING CUSTOMERS:
We booked the Fortina Spa Resort in Sliema on Expedia.com which also offers several other tour packages and car service offers. The Fortina Spa Resort also owns the Captain Morgan Cruise Ships (yes, also the same British rum company...) which gives you a free Grand Harbor Cruise ticket per person with your room. Expedia.com also offers the same exact cruise for $25 per person in advance online. Needless to say, we paid for our cruise when we already had one for free with our room at Fortina Spa Resort. This is actually a problem with Expedia.com bookings, not the hotel. The tour was conducted in English, German and Japanese--by special request.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Fortina Spa Resort in Sliema, Malta mainly for the picturesque views and close proximity to shopping/food with a total spa relaxation experience. We would hope they could make a few improvements, especially at the front desk. Maybe we will stay in Valletta or Floriana next time we visit Malta before booking this same hotel in the future.
