Fort at Number 4 is a living history museum set in the 1740s. It's an excellent learning experience for kids. It isn't very big, and has a small staff, which makes it more personal. There's a guide dressed as each of the original settlers in each area of the museum. They have an apothecary, a general store, a room with kid's games that you can actually play with, and demonstrations of hearth cooking, musket firings, military drills, butter making, etc. If you do plan to go, and have the time to read a good book beforehand, get a copy of NOT WITHOUT PERIL by Marguerite Allis. The novel is based on the real story of Jemima Sartwell who came to the Connecticut River Valley wilderness in the 1700’s. Her struggle on the harsh frontier gives a new meaning to survival. It's available at the on-line gift shop at www.fortat4.com.
