Fort Sill was orginaly known as Camp Wichita, when is was staked out by General Philip Sheridan in 1869. It was later renamed in honor of Gen Joshua Sill, who died during the Civil War.
Today Fort Sill continues to be an active military base, but the public is allowed in. It was designated National Historic Landmark in 1960 and it's cemeteries contain the graves of many notable Indian chiefs. Most notable are Geronimo and Quanah Parker.
