Fort McMurray Vacation Guide

Fort McMurray is located about 500 km north of Edmonton, Alberta at the end of Highway 63. Most people in the world have not heard of it, but I can guarantee that if you drive a car in North America, you've used gasoline made from oil extracted from the oil sands.

The city currently has a population of about 80,000 people. This number rises everyday as more and more people come here seeking their piece of the multi-billion dollar oil sands industry. Salaries are high, but so is the cost of living.

The area around Fort McMurray is estimated to hold more oil than any other deposit in the world. There are currently three operating companies - Syncrude, Suncor, and Albian Sands (Shell), with a fourth - CNRL - planning to be in operation late 2008 or early 2009. There are also many smaller companies.

Come to Fort McMurray and see the largest mining equipment in the world mine the largest oil deposit in the world. A truly spectacular sight.

I live and work in Fort McMurray. It's a boom town with a population currently at 80,000 and growing fast. Unemployment is nearly 0% and job security is guaranteed. The town has some problems, but it's home for me right now and I have to make the most of it.

A weekend trip to Calgary, Banff and Lake Louise in Southern Alberta. I drove nine hours south from Fort McMurray and it was so worth it. This was my chance to see what I missed during my first trip to Banff in April 2009.

I live in Fort McMurray, which lacks a lot of services and stores, so I made a long list of things I needed and drove to Edmonton to buy them. The following pictures are what I saw along the way.
