Old Hudson Bay Company fort near Vancouver Jan 05, 2011
This is the only example of a Hudson Bay fort near Vancouver. In fact it is the only fort of any type in the Vancouver region. It is operated by Parks Canada but is not a full fledged park. It is within the town Fort Langley about 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver.
This fort was primarily used for trade by the Hudson Bay Company. It was located along the Fraser River for defensive reasons but rarely if ever was used for military uses.
The fort is quite small compared to some I have been in Canada and America but is nicely restored. In the summer they do have actors/staff who are dressed in period clothing to give the fort some authentic flavor.
Another plus is that the modern day town of Fort Langley is a nice little village located along the Fraser River. There are some shops for souvenir shopping and a handful of cafe to keep you fed. There is even a really nice campground within walking distance of the fort.
