Fort Hunt Park May 08, 2014
An odd little park just north of Mount Vernon on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Way back in 1898 when the United States went to war with Spain over Cuba, military officials feared Spanish warships would sail up the Potomac River and shell Washington. Two forts were hastily put up across from one another to defend the city, Fort Hunt in Virginia and Fort Washington in Maryland.

A series of four artillery batteries behind small hills comprised Fort Hunt with a watchtower and temporary barracks. The Spanish navy never threatened the capitol and by the time the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, the artillery guns were removed and shipped to Europe. The forgotten base sat vacant until 1941 when it was converted into a secret debriefing center for high-value German POWs. Some 3,000 German prisoners were interrogated during the war until the base was again shut down in 1946.

The National Park Service assumed control of the land and turned it into a quiet park. No trace remains of the dentention facilities save for a small marker at the base of a flag pole. The old abandoned artillery batteries still stand, however, a rather spooky reminder of a bygone era. You can climb over the batteries that were never used near the picnic facilities. An interesting weekend day trip to visit an obscure bit of Washington history.

Thanks so much for the background of this park. We've driven through it, and found it odd as well.

This is Spanish-American War I gather judging by the year, which was all the conflict lasted as I recall.
