Fort Davis is located in West Texas, and is the county seat of Jeff Davis County. At 5,050 feet in elevation, it has the distinction of being the highest county seat in the state of Texas. The population is about 1,000 people. Fort Davis lies at the feet of the Davis Mountains. The University of Texas operates the McDonald Observatory just outside Fort Davis. It's high elevation, dry climate and pristine skies are perfect for the observatory.

Fort Davis was established as a military fort to protect emigrants and mail carriers on the route from San Antonio to El Paso. After the Civil War ended, it was home to the Buffalo Soldiers, an all black Army unit.
