Fort Davis Post Hospital May 25, 2017
In the mid-1800s, pioneers, goldminers, and other fortune seekers were heading west and the U.S. Government was determined to secure the routes they were using. In 1854, Fort Davis was the first military post established along the route through the 600 miles of wilderness between San Antonio and El Paso. The post was all but abandoned during the Civil War and when troops returned to the fort in 1867, little of value remained. New buildings were constructed of stone and adobe and 12 companies of infantry and cavalry were stationed here to patrol the roads through the area, escort wagon trains and mail deliveries, and patrol the wilderness. Many of the soldiers stationed here were black "buffalo soldiers". The fort stayed in operation until 1891. Today it is one of the best preserved frontier forts in the country with a combination of original buildings and reconstructions. This visit I mostly came to see the Post Hospital which was under renovation when I last visited. Despite the dangers of being a soldier on the frontier, most soldiers died of illness or disease. The post doctors frequently did not have a lot of training and the knowledge of things like sanitation and transfer of germs was not prevalent during the time the fort was active. Hours are 8 AM to 5 PM daily except national holidays. Admission is $7 for 7 days but I get in free as a disabled veteran. Well worth a visit.
