What a waste! Nov 24, 2014
Fort Cornwallis was built by Sir Francis Light, who was the captain of Penang. Started in 1786, and completed in 1810, for the British East India Company, to defend the island of Penang from invaders. Turned out, the fort was used more for administrative purposes than for defense.

Not hard to find, as it is located by the sea, near the Clock Tower and other colonial buildings of Georgian architecture. Why it was named after Charles Cornwallis, more known in the US as the guy who surrendered to George Washington to end the Revolutionary Way, I have no idea. But that is the least of this attraction’s problems.

Well, with all this history, there is really not much to see inside the fort. A cannon pointing out to sea, an amphitheater, a statue of Francis Light, and a few other things. There is a brief description near the statue, giving the history on the fort and Light himself, but that is as good as it gets, when it comes to descriptions. Even worse, is that the same history gets repeated 2 more times on 2 signs, near each other.

There is a bunker building, with more descriptions on the fort. But some parts were under construction, making it hard to follow the history, as some of it was arranged out of order. It gets very confusing, and I gave up after a while.

And oh yeah, you can go inside the chapel, where they keep playing a travel promotion video on Penang, and where you can sit and rest your feet. Have to admit, that video was a reminder to me, that there is still a lot more to see in Penang, and more likely, better than this stinker. If that is the best thing that I can think of for this place, something is seriously wrong.

Maybe when the construction is all done, this place will be more worth visiting. But in this current state, I find Fort Cornwallis to be a huge waste of time, and not worth visiting at all.
the stage of the amphitheater area…

Its true theres nothing much to see inside a fort, it is just left as a fort facing the sea. It was worst when i visited in 2003, theres not even a travel video! Congrats on the feature!
