Fort / Calvaire Malaucene Oct 03, 2014
Surprisingly little is known about this fort which was most probably built in the 12th century. It grew to some importance during the Avignon Papacy in the 14th and 15th century, according to documents some gardens existed next to it as well as a 22 metre high tower. The fort was destroyed in the 17th century, leaving only the base intact. In 1828, oratory niches were installed, a large cross was added later. The locals just call it “the Calvary” (Calvaire). Today, there is little to see up there – but the view over the town as well as over the nearby landscapes (including Mont Ventoux) is just marvelous! But do not forget a look at details while going up – you’ll find Gothic arches and windows which were closed long time ago.

P.S.: Don't be disappointed - it is not as large as it may appear on some pictures.
